How to Update Magisk & Survive Android OTA Updates
Master guide for updating Magisk to newer releases and taking official monthly Android Over-The-Air (OTA) security patches without losing root access and without needing a computer.
Two Update Scenarios Explained
- Scenario 1: Updating Magisk Software (App & Daemon): When a new version of Magisk is released (e.g., updating from v27.0 to v30.7) on your already rooted device. Performed directly inside the Magisk App via Direct Install.
- Scenario 2: Installing an Android OS System Update (OTA): When Google, OnePlus, or Xiaomi pushes a monthly security patch. Performed via Restore Images followed by Install to Inactive Slot (After OTA).
Scenario 1: Updating Magisk Directly (In-App)
When a new Magisk version is available, update your app and daemon in under 60 seconds:
- Open the Magisk App. If an update is available, an "Update" button will appear on the top card.
- First, tap Update next to "App" to install the latest APK.
- Once the app updates, open it and tap Update next to "Magisk".
- Under Method, select "Direct Install (Recommended)".
- Magisk will patch the active boot partition in real time.
- Tap Reboot in the bottom right corner.
Scenario 2: How to Take Monthly Android OTAs Without Losing Root
Modern Android devices utilize seamless A/B partition switching. When an OTA is installed, Android writes the update to the inactive slot in the background while you continue using your phone. Follow this timing strictly:
Step 1: Restore Stock Images in Magisk
- Open the Magisk App.
- Tap "Uninstall Magisk" on the main screen.
- Select "Restore Images".
- Magisk will restore your stock, unmodified boot image from its internal backup (
/data/magisk_backup_[hash]). - CRITICAL: DO NOT REBOOT YOUR PHONE NOW! Keep the Magisk App in the background.
Step 2: Download & Apply the Official System Update
- Open Android Settings -> System -> System Update (or Software Update).
- Check for updates and tap Download and Install.
- Because you restored the stock boot image in Step 1, the Android OTA verification will pass without error.
- Wait for the update to finish Step 1 (downloading) and Step 2 (optimizing apps).
- When the screen displays "Restart now" or "Reboot to finish update":
STOP! DO NOT TAP RESTART!
Step 3: Install Magisk to Inactive Slot
- Switch back to the Magisk App.
- Tap Install on the Magisk card.
- Select "Install to Inactive Slot (After OTA)".
- Magisk will detect the newly updated OS in the second partition slot, patch its ramdisk, and configure boot parameters.
- When Magisk outputs
All done!, tap the blue Reboot button inside Magisk. - Your phone will reboot into the freshly updated Android build with 100% root privileges fully preserved!
Troubleshooting OTA Installation Errors
Android System Update says "Installation problem" or fails at 10%. Why?
This occurs if you modified read-only system partitions directly (e.g. using older root tools or manual rw mounts) or if you forgot to tap "Restore Images" before starting the OTA download. If stock images cannot be restored from Magisk backup, download the full stock factory image and flash stock boot.img and init_boot.img via Fastboot.
What if I accidentally tapped the System "Restart now" button before patching the inactive slot?
Your phone will boot into the new Android build in a stock, unrooted state. Don't panic! Simply extract the stock init_boot.img or boot.img from the new factory firmware build, patch it in the Magisk App, and flash it via Fastboot as described in our Boot Image Patching Guide.
